Frequently Asked Questions

I've never done any road cycling before and don't own a road bike. Can I take part in the Bike Challenge with my mountain bike?

Yes, absolutely! The minimum requirement for taking part in the Bike Challenge is just to be able to ride a bike for around 1 hour - 1 hour 1/2, so it doesn't matter if you've never done any road cycling before. We cater for all levels of cyclists right up to very advanced, and you can take part in a Bike Challenge course on any kind of bike, so riding a MTB is totally fine.

I don't want to enter the races at the end of the Bike Challenge, but still want to take part in the course. Is it ok to register without completing the 'challenge' at the end?

Yup, sure is. The races are not compulsory (and are not included in your course registration fee), we just base the course around them to give you the opportunity to set yourself a goal and a challenge to work towards. This makes it easier to find the motivation to get out on your bike on days when it's the last thing you feel like doing! If you're just not interested in entering an event that's fine, but if you're feeling nervous about this contact us for more info. All the events we target have team options that mean you don't have to ride the entire course yourself, so really all you need to get to the finish line is some preparation and a bit of determination!

When are the bunch rides and what happens if I miss one?

The bunch rides are on Wednesday evenings from 6pm and Sunday mornings from 8:30am or 9am (depending on the group). We don't take attendance for anything in the course, so it's entirely up to you to fit in what you can around your other commitments. We've found that even participants who can only make one ride a week still get a lot of benefit from this, so this is something to keep in mind if you're wondering how to fit everything in!

I consider myself a very experienced rider and have already done a lot of racing. Is the Bike Challenge mostly aimed at beginners?

The Bike Challenge caters for all levels of riding abilities from complete beginner to very advanced. During the 10-week spring and summer Bike Challenge courses, participants are split into groups based on riding experience - so you're only ever riding with people who are of the same level as you.

If you're more advanced than the levels on offer in the 10-week courses, contact us to talk about joining the Bike Challenge Development Squad. This group receives structured training and racing support, and is perfect for advanced riders wanting more of a challenge...

There's always something new to learn or improve on, and the Bike Challenge can help you achieve your cycling goals - whether they be to win a major event or simply make it to the finish line.

I'm not 18 yet but would love to do a Bike Challenge course. Is there a minimum age requirement?

Yes, unfortunately we are only able to take riders who are 18 years and over at the moment. If you are interested in a course for younger people (or know someone who might be) get in touch with us so we can gauge how much demand there is for this. Keep checking back here and on our Facebook page so you don't miss out when we do launch our new courses!
